South Carolina's longest running continuous festival will sadly end it's run this year. Hampton County has devoted a weeklong festival to the watermelon since 1939 but, say organizers of the event, the festival has run it's course. Organizers sight a lack of volunteer participation coupled with decreasing attendance over recent years ultimately were the deciding factors in bringing the festival to a close. The celebration for the watermelon has included a watermelon-eating contest, a 5K run, a street dance featuring beach music, and a parade through the towns of Varnville and Hampton, located in the heart of the county.
