Two South Florida teachers have been recognized on a national level for their work to help protect and raise awareness about the rare and endangered Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (PNWTO).

Laura Simoes and Traci Phillips of Pine Crest School have recently been recognized by The American Preservation Society for their philanthropic work during the 2016-2017 school year. These two educators initially began their efforts to protect the PNWTO after Traci experienced ,first hand, a rare sighting of this elusive creature. "I was running a 50 mile race through the mountains of Oregon and I will never forget when I stumbled upon the tree octopus. I immediately contacted race officials who were quickly in touch with The American Preservation Society."

Once Phillips returned home to Boca Raton, she eagerly shared her photographs and experience with a colleague, Laura Simoes, who instantly knew she wanted to be involved with preservation efforts. "I have always loved animals and feel that every species is here on our planet for a reason and deserves to remain here."

The two plan to travel to Oregon this December to accept their award in person!
