The news today is all about fake news.

It seems to be everywhere. Sometimes it is fun to read it realize it is a parody or spoof of something else, but experts warn there is a dark side to fake news.

"The problem with fake news is that it becomes so pervasive that normal people cannot tell it is fake", according to deputy dean of coprology at Ontario's prestigious Osgoode Univerasity, Dr. Timothy Horton. According to Horton, advertising firms are suffering from email spam and "spamvertising" more than average people.

"The issue is that people have learned to become very discriminating, so it is hard tell what is true, and what is wishful thinking.", he adds.

Advertising firms have now resorted to a campaign whereby they subvert people's ability to discriminate truth from falsehood. The trick is to publish computer generated text on fake news sites, and see what sticks.

Normally they would work very hard to cover such a thing up, but nowadays, they actually add breaking news to their fake web sites so everyone thinks it is fake, like the rest of the site.

"Diabolical!" is how Professor Horton describes it over coffee and donuts, and adds "The best lies are the ones that are mostly true, with an element of deception."

The problem is that there is so much falsehood out there, few people can detect truth from confabulation. But there is hope yet.

Professor Horton has three doctoral candidates on his "Project Starbucks" performing research into computer assisted diagnosis of an "online pathology of deception" with a fair amount of success.

Horton laments that he originally had eight students working on this, but they took their prototype to some online advertisers who tune their pitches to be more credible using their software as an anti-anti-truth detector detector.

Professor Horton wraps it up - "it is convoluted, but they are getting rich doing this. It won't last forever. People will eventually learn to hear the truth again someday, and it will set them free."

Let's hope he is right.
