The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, in cooperation with SANDAG, announced a plan to elevate their Security Department to a full fledged Police Department today. The move comes among increased criticism about Bus and Trolley safety and the effectiveness of the Security Department.

Part one of the plan includes evaluating current Security Officers who would be eligible to obtain a POST Certificate under California Law, these employees will be given the first opportunity to attend the basic POST Academy some time in early 2018. Once certified, these officers will begin patrolling the Bus and Trolley, using their authority to fully enforce the law.

"It's something we looked at for a couple of years before deciding on," said Manny Guatarama, the MTS Chief of Police, "this move will give us more flexibility and authority to ensure our patrons have a safe and enjoyable commute."

Currently MTS employes a mix of Code Compliance Inspectors and contracted private security officers. MTS has not officially stated that they will be ending their nearly 30 year relationship with Allied Universal (formerly Heritage Security) but a spokesperson with SANDAG stated that the move would be inevitable.

"We're looking at all our options, once we have real Police Officers on the lines, I don't see the need to retain any private security, as the Police will be much better trained and capable."

Dropping their security contractor in favor of sworn Police comes after years of allegations of abuse, excessive force and corruption among the security staff. In 2015 two Security Officers were dismissed after beating a man with batons on a Trolley in La Mesa, the two men did not face charges.
