On Friday, September 15, 2017, Matthew Newman of Auburn Washington broke the all-time world record for folding the most Origami iguanas in a single hour. Thr previous total amount was 568. When asked why he would take on such a huge challenge, Matt replied, "The iguana is such an under appreciated animal, and simply deserves more recognition, I thought that by doing this and getting them a little media coverage it may help. The local paparazzi were able to snap a photo of Matt taking out all the paper scraps from making so many origami animals, to the trash rather than recycle. Matt was quoted later as saying "My recycle bin was full and it was a fire hazard to keep such a large volume of paper scraps around. As far as making the iguana a more well known and understood reptile? The world will just have to wait and see.
