Earlier today during a press conference Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Reid announce a plan to slash rental rates by 50.

While speaking to the press, Mayor Reid detailed her plan to start reducing rental rates effective December 1st, 2017.

"The poor people have been paying outrageous rental rates for long enough! Starting December 1st of this year, all rentals will be subsidized to effectively cut everyone's rent payments in half. Money to fund this expenditure will be the result of a tax levy applied to all homeowners. The average tax increase per month for homeowners will be in the $650-$750, a small price to pay to assist those facing exorbitant rental rates."
According to Mayor Reid, a new "Homeowners Fund" will be set up with money received from Provincial and Federal governments to reimburse any homeowners that have difficulty paying the extra tax"
Details on the complete reduction plan for renters and homeowners will be available on the City of Maple Ridge website later today.
