Beachgoers at Fort Morgan, AL, just a few miles west of Gulf Shores, were shocked to be swimming with millions of roaches in the Gulf of Mexico this past Wednesday, July 12. What appeared to be sea kelp on the surface was actually shed layers of the exoskeleton of the roaches.

"The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, occasionally migrates through open water but we've never seen them in numbers like this before. They are harmless to humans and benificial to marine life," said Gulf Coast University professor of Marine Biology Charles Greyburg.

People are staying in the sand and out of the water and the beachgoers are hoping the storms move them away so they can get back in the water and enjoy their vacation.
